MALE: Laurier Golden Hawks – Curling (10-0 OUA championship)
The Laurier Golden Hawks men's curling team has been selected as an OUA Team of the Month, presented by lululemon, after going unbeaten at the OUA championship to claim their third consecutive provincial title.
Laurier breezed through the competition unblemished in the round robin, picking up victories over Algoma (12-2), Trent (8-2), Queen's (4-3), Western (3-1), McMaster (6-5), Windsor (7-1) and Lakehead (10-5)
Following a 6-5 win over the Carleton Ravens in the quarter-finals, the Golden Hawks defeated the Brock Badgers 6-4 in the semifinals, to advance to the gold medal match for a fourth straight season.
Facing the rival Gaels for the second time in the tournament, with Queen's sitting three, Golden Hawks skip Matthew Hall (Kitchener, Ont.) drew to the button to earn a 5-3 win.
With their championship sweep, the Hawks have now won 22 consecutive games at the conference championship and became just the third team in OUA history to win three straight curling championships.
The Hawks, featuring Hall, vice Jordie Lyon-Hatcher (Ottawa, Ont.), second Kenneth Malcolmson (Toronto, Ont.), lead Russell Cuddie (London, Ont.), and alternate Jeffrey Wanless (Aurora, Ont.), joined the Waterloo Warriors (1983-85) and the Windsor Lancers (1977-79) as they only teams to accomplish the feat.
FEMALE: Toronto Varsity Blues – Volleyball (8-0 regular season)
Following a perfect 8-0 month of February, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team has been named the OUA Team of the Month, presented by lululemon.
After a 3-2 victory over the nationally ranked McMaster Marauders to open the month, the Blues cruised to back-to-back straight set victories over Brock and Trent.
Toronto alternated 3-1 and 3-0 victories over York, Windsor, Western and Waterloo before defeating Guelph 3-2 to finish the regular season with a perfect 19-0 record for a second straight season.
Over the course of the month, the Blues only dropped six sets, four of which were to nationally ranked opponents (McMaster / Western).
The Blues averaged 18.93 digs per set during the month of February, their highest monthly total of the season to go along with 16.1 points per set.
A major reason for the Blues success in the month of February was the continued strong play of second-year right side Alina Dormann (Ottawa, Ont.) who averaged 0.70 services aces and 5.2 points per set in eight matches
