The holiday season is a time for giving and the York University Lions varsity program did its share with multiple initiatives in the local community.
Led by York Sport Council representative Tobi Owotomo, a second-year member of the women's rugby team, the Lions honoured five high school student-athletes in the community with inaugural York Lions Shooting Star Awards.
The five recipients this year were Rodney Osei, Ronneak Cole, Julio Dacosta, Gabriella Gonzalez and Nya Buchanan. They were selected for having demonstrated excellence in academics and athletics and were honoured at an awards banquet last week. Each of them received some Lions gear and a $50 gift card.
Owotomo also led a drive with all varsity teams for an Adopt a Family program. The Lions adopted four local families and provided them gifts, food and clothing to help make their Christmases special. All together, the Lions raised $3500 as well as plenty of food and clothing donations for the four families.
