Semifinals set for Sunday, as potential championship rematch looms between Toronto, McMaster
Oshawa, Ont. – The final four is set for Sunday's semifinals at the OUA Badminton Championship presented by Canuckstuff.
The Toronto Varsity Blues (4-0) and McMaster Marauders (4-0) earned a bye to their respective semifinals by finishing atop their pools.
Waterloo and Ryerson met in one of two quarter-final matches on Saturday night with the Waterloo Warriors winning 6-1. In the other quarter-final Western defeated Ottawa 6-2.
The possibility of a championship rematch still exists with McMaster on the opposite side of the bracket from the three-time defending champion Varsity Blues. McMaster faces the Waterloo Warriors, while the Varsity Blues battle the Western Mustangs. In fact, last season’s top three featured Toronto, McMaster, and Western, with Ottawa finishing fourth. Given the draw, there is still the possibility of having an identical finish in 2018.
Semifinal matches begin at 8 a.m. at UOIT's Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre, followed by the medal matches at 12 p.m. The host Ridgebacks will play in the 9/10th placement game at 8 a.m.
One of two semifinals and the gold medal match will be streamed live on oua.tv.
