It was a low scoring game for both teams as they fought to prove their place in the Top Ten of the CIS. Both teams rallied back and forth, but in the end, it was the Gee-Gees that came away with the win thanks to a 9-1 run to finish the game.
"We lost our focus and [Queen's] got back into the game with rebounds," noted the high scorer for the Gee-Gees, Kellie Ring. "We just hammered down and stepped up big at the end."
Ring pulled through for the Gee-Gees securing a double-double with 10 rebounds and 12 points, the game high of tonight's battle.
The Gee-Gees controlled the game in the first quarter holding the Gaels to 16-4 at one point, the largest spread in the game. In the second quarter the Gaels stepped up the pressure with a 1-3-1 zone in the paint that forced turnovers and drew charges against the Gee-Gees, closing the gap to 26-22 by half-time.
Head coach Andy Sparks stated, "Zone defences are something that nobody else is doing right now and it really took away our tempo."
Jenny Wright, a fifth-year senior, contributed to Queen's lead in the third quarter hitting six points in jumpers inside the arc, bringing the score to 36-35 for Queen's. Wright finished the game 10 points aided by Andrea Priamo and Emily Hazlett putting up 11 and 9 points, respectively, but it wasn't enough to roll over the Gee-Gees.
Though Ottawa struggled after their big lead in the first quarter, they clawed back in the fourth with crucial rebounds and put backs. Point guard Julia Soriano went 3-for-7 from downtown ending with nine points. The inside game for Ottawa was led by Katherine Lemoine, the 6-foot-2 forward laid in 12 points of her own.
Tonight's win will secure Ottawa's rank in the CIS over the Gaels and will become their fourth in a row going into tomorrow night's game against the York University Lions (2-9).
