Waterloo edges out Western on Sunday afternoon
LONDON, Ont. – Despite a goal from Parker Seymour midway through the second half, two quick goals from Waterloo's Jae Jin Lee gave the Warriors a 2-1 win over the Western Mustangs men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Field.
"I thought the first half [Waterloo] played a little more aggressively than we did," said Western head coach Rock Basacco. "We just had a bit of a defensive lapse [in the second half] that lasted for about five to six minutes that caused us a couple of goals. Then you're scrambling to fight back again."
"It's not a great way to play soccer when you're always fighting to try and get a goal back to either tie or to win. We created some good chances, we didn't finish on the chances, and they came back to haunt us."
The loss is the second of the season for the Mustangs, making their record 2-2-2 and putting the team in fifth position in the OUA West Division. Waterloo stands in sixth place with a record of 2-4.
Ten minutes into the second half, Waterloo striker Jae Jin Lee was able to score two back-to-back goals on Western goalie Ben Cowman. Just under two minutes later, Seymour scored one, but it was the only one the Mustangs would earn.
Waterloo's quick two-goal lead came unexpectedly, as the first half of the game was evenly balanced between the teams. There were few shots throughout the first 45 minutes, just three on net for Waterloo and five on net for Western, but all were stopped. The Mustangs were granted multiple free kicks at the top of the opposing team's 18 yard box, but all were stopped by the Warriors wall of defenders.
With a blank scoreboard heading into the second half, both teams played aggressively while trying to get goals for their respective teams. Along with that tough play came yellow cards, three for Waterloo and one for Western.
Western's sole goal scorer commented on the team's errors and what the team needs to work on going forward.
"We just need to have a more positive start," said Seymour. "It seems that so far in the season it takes us a while to really get into the game, and we kind of have to wait to realize that we're either tied or losing to give us a little push. I just think we need to come out a little harder to start off and try to be more ambitious early on."
The Mustangs have just under a week to prepare for their next game on Saturday, September 13 at 3:15 p.m. when they head to Hamilton to face the McMaster Marauders.
NOTES: Sunday's win by Waterloo was the first time the Warriors have defeated the Mustangs since 2006. Over the past eight seasons Western has had the Warriors number, recording a 12-0-5 record in regular season and playoff contests…

Raheem Rose (Etobicoke, Ont.) netted his third of the season to open the scoring in the sixth minute before Lambis tallied twice in two minutes to give the Rams a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Nipissing earns a point against powerful Blues
Coming off a tough loss to Ryerson Saturday afternoon, the Lakers were unable to bounce back the way they wanted against Toronto.
They were able to grab a point, earning a 0-0 draw, but came up short of the full three points.
Grainger Munro was solid in net, as he finished with seven saves for the clean sheet.
It may have not been a win, but there are positives to build on and they're going to take that into training this week as they prepare for their lone game next weekend against Carleton Ravens.
Nipissing hosts the Ravens Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on campus at Nipissing University.
Coming off a win, the women's team was hoping to make it two in a row, which would put themselves near the top of the standings almost halfway through the season.
The men, on the other hand, were looking to bounce back after a loss to Ryerson Saturday.

The Lancer men's soccer team swept their opening weekend at home with a pair of shutout victories over the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks.

Lancer goaltender Kyle Vizirakis earned his first OUA career shutout in net.
On Sunday, the Lancers continued their strong play against the Golden Hawks. Speechley-Price again was on point scoring his fourth goal of the weekend and seventh of the season in the final minutes of the first half.
Laurier goaltender Jordan Brudlu came out of the net to challenge the Ireland native, however Speechley-Price was able to avoid the tackle and placed the ball into the right hand corner of the net.
With Windsor holding a one goal lead entering the second half, both teams came out aggressively. Midway through the half, Brudlu made an initial save on a shot from Iyowuna Jumbo but Kyle Ruggaber was there to knock in the rebound to increase the Lancer lead to two.
Kyle Ruggaber once again earned the shutout in net.
Windsor will now host the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-3-1) next weekend at Alumni Field. Both games will kick-off at 3:15pm on Saturday September 19th & Sunday September 20th.

With a 1-0 victory over the Guelph Gryphons at York Stadium on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13), the No. 1 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team climbed to the top of OUA West standings with a 4-0-1 record.
The first half saw a closely matched contest between both teams, as possession shifted from one end of the field to the other. However, in the 18th minute the Lions snatched their first goal from a powerful set piece delivered by midfielder Jonathon Lao (Unionville, Ont.) that was headed home into the near post by striker Michael Cox (Calgary), his third goal of the season.

Ravens come out on top in chippy affair against Trent
(Ottawa, ON) – Carleton's dominance continued as they handed Trent their second loss of the season in a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at MNP Park.
Trent opened the scoring in the 24th minute off an own goal by Carleton's Mintcho Mintchev (Ottawa, ON) as he headed in a free kick by Trent's Kiefer Thalen.
Carleton did not put anything on the scoreboard until the 41st minute when rookie sensation Dante Cobisa (Ottawa, ON) released a cannon of a shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the 2015 season.
As the half came to a close, the players frustrations started to show. Four yellow cards were handed out to players, two for each team, including one each for Carleton's Theodore Lopez de Castilla (Ottawa, ON) and Mintcho Mintchev.
It was a quiet start to the second half until Tim Campos (Ottawa, ON) snuck one past Trent keeper David Ellis to give Carleton the 2-1 lead.
Walker Smith (Ottawa, ON) scored late in the game, securing the victory for Carleton. The win helps secure Carleton's #2 ranking in the OUA East.
Carleton looks to continue their wining streak as they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury next Saturday.
