MALE: Niklas Bauer (Newmarket, Ont.) – 4th yr – Laurier Golden Hawks – Soccer
Golden Hawks forward Niklas Bauer (Newmarket, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week after he scored four goals in two games as Laurier picked up wins against Windsor and Western.
On Friday against the Lancers, the fourth-year business major, scored twice in the second half, including the game-winner as Laurier rallied to knock off Windsor 3-1.
The Newmarket, Ont. native followed that up on Sunday afternoon against the Mustangs as he scored another pair of goals, one of which was the game-winner late in the second half.
With the win Sunday, the Golden Hawks improve to 8-5-1 and sit in third place in the OUA West division. The eight wins are the most in program history since 2001.
The 5’10”, 165 lbs forward now leads the conference in both goals (15) and points (19).
Bauer will look to add to his league lead this week as Laurier takes on the McMaster Marauders Thursday before closing out the season on the road Sunday against the Brock Badgers.
FEMALE: Claire Sumner (Calgary. Alta.) – 4th yr. – Queen's Gaels – Cross Country
It was a historic homecoming for Queen’s Gaels cross country runner Claire Sumner (Calgary, Alta.) who has been recognized as the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week.
Sumner, a fourth-year life sciences student-athlete, finished 1st in the first 8km race for a women's program at the Queen’s Invitational.
Sumner's time of 27:50.91 also helped the Gaels to a 1st place team finish just ahead of the second place Western Mustangs.
The identical 8km runs for both women and men is believed to be the first collegiate cross-country meet in North America where both the men and women contested identical race distances.
With just under two weeks to go to the OUA championship, Sumner and the Gaels will now shift their focus to that event as they look to hoist the Queen's University Cup for the first time since 2003.
