Queen’s wins U SPORTS Men’s Cross Country Championship; finish fifth on the Women’s side

Queen's Men's Cross Country are national champions after winning the Men's team event at the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships in Kelowna, B.C. on Saturday. It was Queen's first national championship in Cross Country since 1984.

The Gaels team of Jude Wheeler-Dee, Roman Mironov, Will Cox, Tanner Hueglin, Angus Skinner, Peter Neill, and Miles Brackenbury finished with a combined 94 points, 36 points less than the second place finishers, the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, who combined for 130 points.
 
With the victory, Queen's Cross Country Head Coach Mark Bomba was named the U SPORTS Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Wheeler-Dee (Chemistry) was the top finisher for the Gaels, crossing the finish line 13th overall with a final time of 0:23.49, followed closely by Mironov (Commerce), with finished 14th with the same time.

Cox (Graduate Studies) finished 20th overall at 0:24.03, Hueglin (Arts & Science) was 26th overall at 0:24.07, and Skinner (Education) was 30th overall at 0:24.14.

Neill (Applied Science) finished with a time of 0:24.30 for 48th overall and Brackenbury (Concurrent Education – Political Studies Major) finished with a time of 0:25.11 in 98th overall.

Wheeler-Dee and Mironov earned U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian recognition for their performances.

On the Women's side, the Gaels finished fifth overall in the team event.

Queen's team of Alyshia Alkerton, Elizabeth Vroom, Ella Lane, Olivia Baggley, Lauren Lowther, Katherine Taylor, and Emma Graham finished with 112 combined points, 26 points more than the fourth place finishers, the StFX X-Women, and 45 points off the podium.

Alkerton (Arts & Science) was the Gaels' top finisher, crossing the finish line 13th overall with a final time of 0:27.39, followed by Vroom (Engineering) with a time of 0:28.23 in 30th place overall. Lane (Arts & Science) was 39th overall with a time of 0:28.41, Baggley (Arts & Science) finished 49th overall with a time of 0:28.51, and Lowther (Graduate Studies) finished 63rd overall with a time of 0:29.06.

Taylor (Graduate Studies) was 66th overall with a time of 0:29.11 and Graham (Concurrent Education – Political Studies Major) was 67th overall with a time of 0:29.15.

Alkerton was named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian for the result.
