The Brock University men's and women's cross country team ventured to Waterloo for the Don Mills Open on Saturday, October 1st. This was their second race of the season.
Brock women's cross country captures Don Mills title, Men 3rd
The Brock University men's and women's cross country team ventured to Waterloo for the Don Mills Open on Saturday, October 1st. This was their second race of the season.
This time the women would be racing over 6 kilometers. Building upon last week, the women's team was lead by a fast-paced Joanna Francolini (3rd, 23:06), followed by an onslaught of Brock women with Brittany Murphy (9th, 23:35), Paulina Sergnese (11th, 23:44), Alex Ratcliffe (13th, 23:52), Erin Laughlin (14th, 23:55) and Cassandra Hinz (17th, 24:25).
The women's team was able to work together to have a score of 41 points which resulted in an overall women's team win. They were followed by the Waterloo Warriors (43) in 2nd, and the Laurier Golden Hawks (81) in 3rd.
On the men's side, Jelmer van den Hadelkamp was able to lead the Brock men over 10 kilometers with a 2nd place in 33:27. He was followed by Brendan Sanders (15th, 35:34), Ryan Gagnon (19th, 35:43), Lucas Salazer-Reid (26th, 36:00), Akshar Patel (27th, 36:16), Shane Singh (42nd, 37:31), and Stevie Blankenship (63rd, 39:31).
The Brock men were able to claim 3rd place as a team, scoring 67 points. In front of them were the Laurier Golden Hawks (60) and the winning team was the Waterloo Warriors (23).
The Brock Cross Country will be racing next at the OUA Preview in Toronto on October 16th.

Sheridan, Boucher medal for XC at Don Mills
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 2, 2016) – Led by Joe Sheridan and Bettina Boucher, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks cross country teams had strong showings at the Don Mills Invitational on Saturday with the men finishing second in the team standings while the women finished third.
In the men's 10-kilometer race, Sheridan, a native of Waterloo, Ont., was one of three Golden Hawks to finish inside the Top 20 as he earned an individual bronze medal with a time of 33 minutes, 41.6 seconds.
Joining Sheridan inside the Top 20 were Daniel Hilbers of Port Elgin, Ont., and Brendan Masters of Kitchener, Ont. Hilbers finished 10th with a time of 34:46.6 while Masters was 14th in 35:29.4
In the women's six-kilometer race, Boucher, originally from Whitby, Ont., finished as the top university runner at the event, and second overall to win a silver medal, as she ran a time of 22:27.8.
Her teammate, Jessica Martin of Port Elgin, Ont., also found her way into the Top 20 as she finished 19th, crossing the line in 24:29.9.
The Golden Hawks next meet will be the University of Toronto Open at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, Ont., on Sunday, October 16.

Sharma finishes fifth for Lions at Don Mills Open
York University Lions cross country runner Suraj Sharma finished in fifth place to lead all Lions at the Don Mills Open in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday (Oct. 1).
The fifth-year runner crossed the finish line of the 10km race in a time of 33:57 for the first top-five finish of his career and the first by a Lion since Esteban Clavijo finished fifth at the Queen's Invitational meet in 2013.
Sharma was one of four Lions competing in the 83-man field. Teammate Brandon Belan (Espanola, Ont.) also had a tremendous showing with a 13th-place result. Rookies Colton LaFrance (Espanola, Ont.) and Abdiaziz Ali (Etobicoke, Ont.) were 35th and 38th, respectively.
In the women's 6km race, Vaishnavy Yogarajah (Brampton, Ont.) crossed the finish line in a time of 24:28 for an 18th-place result to lead all Lions. Rookie Anna Green (Ottawa) was right behind her in 21st place, followed by Shae Turner (Toronto) in 45th position and Brittania Fusca (Markham, Ont.) in 60th.
The Lions have one more regular season meet at the U of T Open on Sunday, Oct. 16 in Etobicoke, Ont., before the OUA championships, which will also be hosted by the Varsity Blues on Sunday, Oct. 30.
