Guelph, Ont. – After three scoreless periods of play, it took the Waterloo Warriors just 10 seconds into overtime to find the game-winner as they upset the sixth ranked Gryphons 1-0 Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 5-1-2 on the season while the Warriors snap a seven game losing streak and now sit at 2-5-3.
Despite outshooting the Warriors 30-19 on the night, it was evenly played game throughout. The Gryphons' best scoring chance came when Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) hit the post at the 12:12 mark of the third period. At the other end of the ice, Gryphon goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) was solid in net for Guelph all night, but had no chance on the game-winner. Off of a turnover in the opening seconds of overtime, Kaitlyn McDonnell (Kincardine, Ont.) would fire a perfect placed shot past Nehring to give the Warriors their second win of the season.
The Gryphons will not have much time to dwell on this result with the defending OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks visiting the Gryphon Centre on Saturday. Puck drop is at 7:30pm.
