Bold Secure Key In-Division Win Over Badgers

TORONTO ā€”The No. 10 ranked Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team won a crucial in-division contest against the Brock University Badgers 72-58 on Sunday afternoon. This game marked the Bold's first match-up against former TMU Lead Assistant Coach and current Brock Head Coach, Shae Dheensaw.

TMU's Kaillie Hall produced an impressive offensive performance, accumulating 21 points to help power the Bold to their win.

"I think anytime you can get an in-division win it's huge especially with it being in the second half of the season," said Hall.

The first quarter began slower offensively, with both teams struggling to get their shots to fall. After finding their offensive groove, the Bold then began to shoot with confidence.

Haley Fedick looked good from beyond the arc netting two key threes to help the Bold form their lead against the Badgers. The Bold closed off the first with the lead, 18-9.

In the second quarter, the Bold began to control the game, settling into their rhythm and executing their shots.

Zoe Idahosa used her strength to her advantage to execute key plays going up tough under the net and blocking a breakaway layup attempt from Brock.

Fighting for the ball under the net, Kait Nichols accumulated eight rebounds in the first half upping the Bold's physicality. TMU finished off the first half with the lead, 38-21.

Brock began to shake the Bold up a bit in the third quarter as they went on an offensive run.

Working to keep TMU's lead, Hailey Franco-DeRyck executed key offensive and defensive plays, accumulating seven rebounds, six points and two steals.

The Badgers fought hard to minimize the deficit, with the Bold leading by just nine points 39-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Not wanting their lead to slip away in the fourth quarter the Bold regained their offensive momentum.

With scoring efforts from Hall, Catrina Garvey who finished with 14 points and Fedick who added 10 points, the Bold secured a 72-58 win.

Hall spoke of the teams in-game connection, "I think we've been playing really well in flow collectively, we've just been finding each other really well and hoping to continue to grow that."

Coach Carly Clarke was pleased with the developments in today's game,"I thought we did a good job at controlling the game and we got a couple of key scores, some layups and that was a big build from yesterday."

Coming full circle the Bold found it different to compete against a familiar face, noticing some TMU flair that Dheensaw took to Brock.

"There were a few offensive actions that would certainly be familiar to us but I think more than anything it's really cool to see how she's doing some of her own things, maybe they're mixed in there but you know she's really developing her own thing and I think she's doing a great job," said Coach Clarke.

The Bold will hit the road next weekend when they face off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, Jan. 17.

Idahosa believes that this win will fuel the Bold going into next weekend, "I feel like this is picking up our spirits, we got the win against our former assistant coach and going forward I feel like we're just dialed in."

Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse. Support the Bold from afar by catching all the action on OUA.tv.
