Banner Season: Badgers, Mustangs dominate to capture conference rowing banners in Welland
Welland, Ont. - The Western Mustangs and the Brock Badgers are this year's OUA rowing champions, as they raise the banners at the Welland International Flatwater Centre in Welland.
RESULTS
The Western Mustangs' women's team was able to defend their title, continuing their rowing dynasty by raising their eighth consecutive OUA rowing banner, a streak that dates back to 2013.
Collecting a total of 442 points over the one-day championship regatta, the Mustangs stepped onto the podium a total of eight times, winning three gold, two silver, and three bronze. The Queen's Gaels finished second with 324 points while the Brock Badgers finished third with 269 points.
The Brock Badgers men's team hit the water in Welland in dominant fashion on Saturday, tallying a total of nine medals throughout the day, winning five gold, three silver, and one bronze for a total of 537 total points.
Queen's Gael's Gavin Stone was selected by the coaches as the OUA Men's Rowing Athlete of the Year, winning gold in the men's singles and men's eight competitions.
Grace VandenBroek of the Trent Excalibur earned the OUA Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year following her golden performance in the women's singles event.
Tom Kent (Brock) and Stu MacKenzie (Ottawa) earned the men's and women's Coach of the Year honours.
Gold medallists from each event makes up the OUA All-Star Team.
