MVB RECAP: Gryphons Split Weekend Doubleheader Against Mustangs; Clinch Spot in OUA Playoffs

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's volleyball team clinched their spot in the postseason after earned a weekend home split against the Western Mustangs to finish off the 2024-25 OUA regular season. Both matches this weekend went the full five sets with the Gryphons winning on Friday night (Feb. 14) and the Mustangs winning on Saturday night (Feb. 15). Guelph finished the regular season with a 9-11 record as they'll enter the OUA playoffs as the No. 7 seed and will travel to Kingston to face the No. 2 seed Queen's Gaels on Friday, Feb. 21. 
 
Game 1 (Friday, Feb. 14, 2025) | Guelph 3 – Western 2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11)

The Gryphons following their week off opened the weekend with a five set victory on home court over the Mustangs. Guelph after dropping the opening set, rebounded taking the next two sets before the Mustangs won the fourth to send it to a deciding fifth set where a 9-2 run helped the Gryphons to a 15-11 set win in the fifth to clinch the match. The Gryphons were led on Friday night by fourth-year left side, Cameron Chadwick. The Barrie, Ontario native finished the match with 19.5 points, a team high 17 kills and 11 digs. Alexander Odle (11 kills) and Killian Donovan (10 kills) both reach the double-digit plateau for kills on the night.
 
Game 2 (Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025) | Guelph 2 – Western 3 (25-19, 17-25, 24-26, 25-22, 17-19)

Less than 24 hours after going the distance on Friday night, the Gryphons and Mustangs were back at it on Saturday for a 7pm matchup at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Once again, five sets would be required to determine a winner. The match played in reverse from Friday's match as the Gryphons took the opening set, the Mustangs taking the next two and the Gryphs closing out the fourth set on an 8-3 run to send it to a decisive fifth set. Guelph would get off to a quick 4-1 lead and would regain the three point advantage thanks to three straight Cameron Chadwick kills to go up 10-7. Western would make a run as they took the first lead of the set at 12-11 and never relinquished the advantage the rest of the match. The Gryphons kill off four match points but were fell short as the Mustangs were able to win fifth set 19-17. The Gryphons were once again led by Cameron Chadwick as he finished the match with 23.5 points and 20 kills. Braeden Sears off the bench made an impact, scoring 17.5 points, 16 kill and 10 digs.
