No. 8 Badgers advance to quarterfinals with 98-80 win over Golden Hawks
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The No. 8 ranked Brock men's basketball team opened the 2016 OUA playoffs with a 98-80 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in front of a capacity crowd at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night.
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The No. 8 ranked Brock men's basketball team opened the 2016 OUA playoffs with a 98-80 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in front of a capacity crowd at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night.
With the victory, the Badgers advance to the second round of the OUA playoffs for the first time since 2012-13. They will now take on the Carleton Ravens Saturday night in the Nation's Capital.
Brock had four players in double figures led by the trio of Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, ON) Johneil Simpson (Toronto, ON) and Ryan Bennett (Toronto, ON) who all contributed with 20+ points each. Elgadi led the way with 29 points 11 rebounds and five assists. Simpson added 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Bennett added 20 points and four rebounds.
Zachary Angelini (Hamilton, ON) finished with 10 points, while Matt Marshall (Burlington, ON) collected six points, four rebounds and game-high nine assists in the victory.
Leading Laurier's offense was Matt Chesson (17), Garrison Thomas (15), Will Coulthard (14) and Chuder Teny (12).
For the game, Brock shot 54.4% (37-for-68) from the field, 41.7% (5-for-12) from beyond the arc and 86.4% (19-for-22) from the charity stripe. Laurier went 24-for-66 (36.4%) from the floor including 8-for-30 (26.7%) from three-point land and 24-for-37 (64.9%) from the free throw line.
