FENCING: Carleton earns silver in men’s sabre, women’s epee tune up to match last year’s gold medal
OTTAWA, ON – Several teams from the province hit the road to visit Canada’s capital and face-off against each other as the Ravens hosted the 2018 Carleton Invitational on January 13 and 14 at the North Fenn Gymnasium.
Both Ravens men’s and women’s fencing teams finished off their final event in second place in Sabre and fourth in Epee respectively, leading up to the 2017-2018 OUA Fencing Championship.
The best results and perhaps the best promise for next month’s OUA Championship on the men’s side came from the Sabre squad with a silver medal and the only podium standing for the Ravens. The squad included third-year students Mohamed Ghazal (Mississauga, ON) and Derek Madrid (Los Alamitos, CA) along with first year students Matheson Go (Vancouver, BC) and Kusey Gunesli (Kanata, ON). The team has only a few weeks to finalize their preparation before they compete against the best universities in the province at the 2017-2018 OUA Championship on February 3 and 4, hosted by RMC.
On the women’s side, the team formed two Epee threesomes searching for the best possible combination prior to next month’s OUA Championship to match their last year’s conference gold medal. Sharon Schuppe (South Burlington, VT), Meia Copeland (Kanata, ON), and alumna Emese Dukai (Victoria, BC) obtained fourth place, while Katie McTaggart (Stirling, ON), Madelyn Krasnay (Oshawa, ON), and recruit Paulina Chametka took seventh place. The women’s team has just over a month to tune up the combination as the Carleton University Ravens will host the 2017-2018 OUA Championship on February 17 and 18th.
