St-Amand and Courtney named RMC Athletes of the Year
KINGSTON, Ont. – The achievements and successes of RMCC varsity athletes were highlighted during the annual Varsity Awards Ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, March 22nd.
KINGSTON, Ont. – The achievements and successes of RMCC varsity athletes were highlighted during the annual Varsity Awards Ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, March 22nd.
Matt Courtney (Brockville, ON) was named recipient of the Tommy Smart Cup as RMC Male Athlete of the Year for a second consecutive year. The fourth year Honours Business Administration student was named OUA All-Star for a fourth consecutive season after finishing fourth in the league in scoring, setting a school mark for points in the process. He helped lead the men's rugby team to their third playoff berth in four seasons. Courtney was also named Top 4th Year Athlete at the College.
Chelsea St-Amand (Beachburg, ON) won her first Kelly Gawne Memorial Cup as RMC Female Athlete of the Year. The fourth year Honours Psychology student won gold in team foil at the 2017 OUA Fencing Championships, hosted at Queen`s, as RMC finished in second place overall at the event for a third consecutive year.
Mitchell Hewson (Vernon, BC), a fourth year Honours History student, was named recipient of the H.R.H. Prince of Wales Cup for his excellence in all four components throughout his college years. The forward with the men's hockey team and Academic All-Canadian has maintained high marks in a demanding academic program, while achieving bilingual status and holding several leadership positions during his time at RMC. He has previously been the recipient of the Dr. P.F. Fisher Memorial Trophy and Scholarship, which is awarded to a Third Year cadet considered most deserving by reason of academic standing and qualities of leadership and sportsmanship.
The Captain Matthew Dawe Memorial Cup is awarded annually to the outstanding male or female ROTP varsity athlete, of any year, who excels in all aspects of College life at RMC. Mackenzie Brauer (Ajax, ON) has been an important member of the women's soccer team both on and off the field. The fourth year Honours Chemistry student served as team captain, setting the example through her commitment and involvement with the program.
Also recognized for their performances this past year were OUA All-Star Garrett Whelan from the fencing team (Top 1st Year Athlete) and OUA East 2nd Team All-Star Dale Towe from the men's volleyball team (Top 2nd Year Athlete). Three members of the men's hockey team were also recognized, as defensemen Michael Keenan (Top 3rd Year athlete) and Eric Bouchard (Top Team Captain) and forward Owen Gill (Fair Play) received awards. The men's fencing team was named RMCC Team of the Year, as they finished third overall at the OUA Championships this past February. The bronze finish was a marked improvement from the previous year, when the men`s team ranked seventh overall.
