University of Toronto Varsity Blues repeat as OUA Men's Fencing Champions
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues captured the 2017 OUA Men's Fencing Championship title Sunday afternoon at the Ian Beddis Gymnasium at Brock University.
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues captured the 2017 OUA Men's Fencing Championship title Sunday afternoon at the Ian Beddis Gymnasium at Brock University.
The Varsity Blues took home gold in the Men's Epee Team Relay event and silver in the Sabre, claiming the OUA banner for a second straight year. Toronto finished first with a total of 254 points, while Carleton (230) and RMC (173) brought home overall silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In the most exciting final of the day, York won their first team medal since 1986 as they defeated the Blues by a score of 45-44 in the Sabre Team Relay event. RMC earned bronze after beating their crosstown rivals from Queen's.
Carleton won gold in the Men's Foil event over the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees by the score of 45-25.
The Paladins had a successful Sunday, finishing second in Epee and with bronze in the Sabre Team Relay.
Ryerson finished fourth overall after winning bronze in both the Foil and Epee Team Relay events.
On Day One, No. 1 ranked Samuel Hardwicke-Brown from Ryerson took home individual gold in Foil and the Charles Walters Trophy. Carleton's Philip McCully and Geoffrey Devaney captured OUA silver and bronze, respectively.
In the Men's Epee, Toronto's Colin Dale captured the gold medal and the Desjarlais Trophy, while Carleton's Zachary Zanussi took home silver and RMC's Dani Mansour collected bronze.
In the men's sabre, York's Adrien Sparling won gold and the Schwende Trophy. The Varsity Blues William Kinney added silver and Queen's Kenneth West took home bronze.
The Christian Vidosa Trophy for Coach of the Year went to University of Guelph's Rebecca Walker. Varsity Blues standout Colin Dale received the George Tully Trophy for Sportsmanship.
