Taylor, Foyle, Ferraro named Football Players of the Week
Burlington, Ont. – Alex Taylor, Lamar Foyle, and Gabe Ferraro have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 14, 2018.
Offence: Alex Taylor, Western Mustangs
Following up on the team’s electric rushing performance a week ago, another Mustang put forth a dynamic effort on the ground against the Ottawa Gee-Gees
Fifth-year running back Alex Taylor was on a mission on Saturday, tearing up the turf to the tune of 225 yards rushing. It didn’t take him long to add to his lofty totals on the day, as he gave Western a 9-0 lead early in the second quarter with an 88-yard touchdown run – his longest rush of the day. Not long into the second half, meanwhile, Taylor would add another major, this time rushing for 47 yards to the house.
It was certainly a triumphant return to the Mustangs lineup for Taylor, not just in the scope of his team’s 33-0 win, but in the grander scheme of his career with the purple ponies. With his 225 yards on 13 carries, the Winnipeg, Man. native broke the Western Mustangs’ record for career rushing yards.
Defence: Lamar Foyle, Toronto Varsity Blues
Fourth-year linebacker Lamar Foyle notched a game and season-high 9.5 tackles and added one break up in the University of Toronto Varsity Blues road loss to the No. 10 Guelph Gryphons on Saturday.
The African studies major from Toronto totaled six solo and seven assisted tackles on the day. Foyle was instrumental in stopping Guelph’s run, notching four solo and two assisted tackles in the second quarter, including four on Gryphons running back Jewan Jeffrey.
His 9.5 tackles co-led all players in Week 8 of OUA football action and ranks Foyle fifth in the OUA with an average of 6.4 tackles per game.
Special Teams: Gabe Ferraro, Guelph Gryphons
Gabe Ferraro's illustrious university kicking career is nearing an end and the two-time All-Canadian is not going out quietly. On Saturday, Ferraro accounted for 22 of his team's 46 points in a 46-8 win over the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues.
Ferraro was a perfect 6-for-6 on field goals, with makes of 25, 34, 43, 13, 15, & 26 yards, respectively. It marks just the second time in his decorated career that he has connected on at least six field goals in a single game. The only other time came a season ago when Ferraro went a perfect 7-for-7 on field goals versus Carleton in the final week of the 2017 regular season to establish a new U SPORTS single-season record with 33 made field goals.
Through seven games this season, Ferraro is tied for the OUA lead with 18 made field goals. For his career, the Mississauga native now has 87 made field goals, leaving him just four back of matching the U SPORTS all-time regular season record.
