Football Players of the Week – September 26th, 2017
Offence: Alex Taylor – Western Mustangs
Fourth-year veteran Alex Taylor proved to be a handful for Queen’s defence on the weekend leading the Mustangs to a 48 – 10 win at TD Stadium.
The Winnipeg native rushed for 184 yards on fourteen carries converting one touchdown. Demonstrating his versatility, he was able to secure 50 yards receiving from five catches, two of which resulted in touchdowns.
The Western Mustangs depended on Taylor’s three touchdowns to secure their fifth consecutive win in regular season play. The Mustangs continue to sit at the top of the table with a 5-0-0 record. They will visit the Laurier Golden Hawks on the weekend in a rematch of last year’s Yates Cup. This game will determine the last remaining undefeated team in OUA regular season play.
Defence: Rossini Sandjong-Djabome – York Lions
York defensive end Rossini Sandjong-Djabome had a huge game for the Lions in their 41-16 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in the 48th Red & Blue Bowl, recording five solo tackles, two sacks for a loss of 19 yards and one fumble recovery for a touchdown.
He scored the first touchdown of his career following a strip sack by teammate Damian Jamieson, picking up the ball on the 10-yard line and running it into the end zone to extend York’s lead to 24-2 in the first half. His first of two sacks came on Toronto’s opening drive of the second half, causing the Blues to turn the ball over on downs with an eight-yard sack on a third-down play. His second was for an 11-yard loss in the fourth quarter.
Sandjong-Djabome leads the OUA in yards lost on sacks (46) and tackles for loss (61) and is fifth in the conference in sacks (four) and tied for 33rd in tackles per game (4.4).
Special Teams: Kurleigh Gittens Jr. – Laurier Golden Hawks
The battle of Waterloo saw two undefeated teams face-off with local bragging rights on the line. On this particular weekend, it was the Laurier Golden Hawks who would come out on top with a 71- 24 victory over their cross-town rivals Waterloo.
Gittens Jr. was dangerous all game long providing the Golden Hawks with options both on special teams and on offence. The fourth-year student from Ottawa was able to convert a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown. He would also add three kickoff returns for 75 yards. On offence, he recorded his second touchdown of the game.
The Laurier Golden Hawks will go head-to-head against the Western Mustangs on September 30th, 2017 at 1:00 pm at University Stadium.
