OFFENCE: Cedric Joseph (Montreal, Que.) – 2nd yr. – Western
Western Mustangs running back Cedric Joseph has been named OUA Offensive Player of the Week after his performance on Saturday had the whole country buzzing.
Joseph, a King’s College student from Montreal, had 16 carries for 107 yards and four touchdowns in Western's 51-24 win over the visiting Carleton Ravens.
When the dust had finally settled Saturday, the 5'11", 205 lbs back was one of the top trending topics on Twitter.
Next up, Joseph and the Mustangs will host the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday in the 109th Yates Cup.
DEFENCE: Mackenzie Ferguson (London, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Western
With a berth in the Yates Cup on the line, Mustangs defensive back Mackenzie Ferguson had one of his biggest games of the season and has been named OUA Defensive Player of the Week.
Playing for his hometown Mustangs, Ferguson recorded 4.5 tackles and a pass breakup in Western's 51-24 win versus Carleton.
The 5'10", 156 lbs defensive back also had an interception with a return of 42 yards.
The Western faithful hope Ferguson has saved his best for last as the Mustangs take on Laurier Saturday looking for their 31st Yates Cup in program history.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Robbie Smith (Brampton, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Laurier
The Laurier Golden Hawks soar into Saturday's Yates Cup thanks in part to a strong performance from Robbie Smith who has been named OUA Special Teams Player of the Week.
Smith, a second-year kin/phys. ed. student-athlete, had two special team's tackles in Laurier's 21-19 victory over the McMaster Marauders.
The Brampton, Ont. native played a key role in limiting McMaster to 27 punt return yards on 8 attempts and 25 kickoff return yards on 2 attempts.
The 6'2", 230 lbs Smith finished the game with 4.5 total tackles.
Smith will look to have another strong game on special teams Saturday in the 109th Yates Cup against the Western Mustangs.
