HAMILTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending November 24th, 2014.
OFFENCE: Wayne Moore (Etobicoke, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – McMaster
The Marauders second-year running back stepped up in a huge way in McMaster's 24-12 Mitchell Bowl win over the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.
Last week's Player of the Week, running back
Chris Pezzetta, left the game early due to an injury, shifting a huge portion of the offence over to Wayne Moore, who came through for his team.
With a trip to the Vanier Cup on the line, Moore rushed for 146 yards on 30 carries and scored the Marauders lone touchdown on a six-yard rush late in the third quarter.
The touchdown opened up a 19-7 lead for McMaster, putting the game virtually out of reach for a Mounties team struggling on offence. Moore, along with a stingy Marauders defence, was a huge reason for McMaster's 41 minutes of possession – more than double the time Mount Allison had the ball.
Moore's longest run of the day was 28 yards, and constantly picked up the tough yards necessary to keep drives alive and the Mounties offence on the sideline.
DEFENCE: Mark Mackie (London, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – McMaster
On a day when several McMaster defenders stood tall, Mark Mackie had the best game of his varsity career. The second-year defensive lineman registered three quarterback sacks, leading a Marauder's pass rush that had nine as a team.
Mackie also led McMaster with five solo tackles and was selected as the Mitchell Bowl Player of the Game.
During the regular season, Mackie ranked fourth on his team with 21.5 tackles and also had 2.5 sacks - a number he has far surpassed in the post-season, recording four in the Marauders three playoff games.
With the Mounties having trouble getting anything going on offence, Johnathan Ngeleka and the Marauders special teams prevented Mount Allison from getting any type of spark from the special teams unit.
Ngeleka registered two special teams tackles and forced two other returns into minimal gains. He also recorded one of McMaster's nine sacks from his rush end position.
As a team, McMaster held Mount Allison to just 110 total return yards on 11 punts and two kick returns.
