McMaster's Tyler Crapigna, Guelph's Daniel Ferraro break OUA single-season field goal record
With one kick, McMaster Marauders K/P Tyler Crapigna broke both a CIS and OUA record.
With one kick, McMaster Marauders K/P Tyler Crapigna wrote his name into both CIS and OUA record books. However, the OUA record wouldn't be his alone for long.
Weeks after establishing himself as OUA's all-time field goal record holder, Crapigna split the uprights four times and with his fourth field goal, a 41-yarder at 7:54 in the 4th quarter, broke the CIS record of 82 held by William Dion of Sherbooke who played from 2008-2012.
The kick also broke the OUA record for single-season field goals with his 23rd of the year. Crapigna broke the previous mark of 22 established by Western's Lirim Hajrullahu (2013) and McMaster's Michael Ray (2003).
Like Crapigna, Guelph Gryphons K/P Daniel Ferraro also entered the weekend with 19 field goals, and after going 4/5 on the day, tied the record in dramatic fashion. With the game tied late in the 4th quarter, Ferraro nailed a 41-yard game winning field goal with 1.7 seconds on the clock, as the No. 6 Guelph Gryphons upset the No. 4 Western Mustangs 49-46.
Ferraro was good from 19, 36 and twice from 41 yards versus Western. On the season, Ferraro has made 23 of his 27 attempts (85%) and has 49 career OUA field goals.
Crapigna was a perfect 4/4 on the day making field goals from 29, 20, 18 and 41 yards in No. 3 McMaster's 27-10 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Crapigna has been good at an 88 percent rate this season, making 23 of his 26 attempts, the longest of which was a 44-yarder.
In his OUA career, Crapigna has made 83 of 96 field goal attempts – a rate of 86 percent – and also made the game winning kick in McMaster's Vanier Cup victory against Laval in 2011. He's never missed an extra point attempt and holds the school record for most career points.
With one game remaining for each team in the regular season, it will come down to next weekend to see who will finish the year on top. McMaster is on the road to face Ottawa, while Guelph is in Waterloo to visit Laurier.
