Baseball Roundup: Guelph, Western, Waterloo and Laurier kick off 2013 season

London, Ont. - The Gryphons baseball team defeated the Western Mustangs 5-4 Wednesday night in their 2013 regular season opener on the road in London.
Starting pitcher Lucas Borges (Brooklin, Ont.) tossed six scoreless innings of one-hit ball including six strikeouts to keep the Mustangs at bay. The offence was led by catcher Justin Interisano (Guelph, Ont.) who was 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored while Peter Riccardi (Pickering, Ont.) was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. The Mustangs would mount a late comeback with three runs in the eighth and another in the ninth but fell short in the comeback bid.
The Gryphons play at Ryerson next on Friday (Sept. 6) at 7:00 p.m.

Waterloo @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's baseball team opened up their OUA regular season on Wednesday night with a strong 5-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors.
Laurier pitching was dominant throughout the game. Starting pitcher, Jordan Petruska, tossed eight shutout innings giving up two hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Freshman Noah Ivanyi was impressive in his Laurier debut working a scoreless 9th inning.
The bottom of the order gave Laurier a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning highlighted by an RBI double courtesy of catcher Daniel Apostoli. Then in the 6th inning, first baseman Adam Shaver hit a clutch 2-out, 2-run single to make the score 5-0, the eventual final.
Laurier took advantage of the 11 walks issued by Waterloo pitching.
