OSHAWA, Ont. – After tying the game with under a minute left, the Ontario Tech University men's hockey team was unable to capitalize on the momentum falling 2-1 in overtime to UQTR Patriotes.
After capturing three of a possible four points on their Montreal road trip, the Ridgebacks were on their heels early against the visiting Patriotes. Although controlling the play for the early part of the game, UQTR was held to the perimeter as the Ridgebacks clogged up the slot area.
"We lost the puck possession game tonight," said head coach
Curtis Hodgins. "In saying that, I thought we played decent defensively, we limited their chances to the outside."
Searching for the tying goal late in regulation, Ontario Tech ramped up their intensity and were rewarded when
Josh Maguire (Cobourg, Ont.) was able to squeak the puck through the visiting netminder. The extra frame represented the third straight game in which the Ridgebacks played beyond 60 minutes.
Both teams will be back on the ice tomorrow as they wrap up their weekend doubleheader, with puck drop set for 3:30 p.m.
• Maguire was able to win a puck battle at the side of the net with assistance from
Austin Eastman (Lindsay, Ont.) before finding a hole between the goalie's arm and body, tying the game at the 19:01 mark of the third.
• Julien Tessier opened the scoring at 11:26 of the second period.
• Samuel L'Italien blasted a one-time at 3:38 of overtime to give the visitors the win.
•
Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) stopped 31 of 33 shots in the OT loss.
• Mathieu Bellemare had 24 saves for the victory.
