Box Score TORONTO --
Liam Heelis scored the game-winner and set up an insurance marker as No.4-ranked McGill cruised to a 6-1 win over the Ryerson Rams in OUA men's hockey, Friday, before a crowd of 921 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on the old Maple Leaf Gardens site.
It marked the fifth consecutive triumph for the Redmen -- improving their lifetime record against Ryerson to 43-7-1 overall -- and was the 300th career victory for McGill head coach
Kelly Nobes. Originially from West Hill, Ont., Nobes attended many a Leafs game in his youth at MLG and now owns a
300-237-14 overall record in 15 years as a CIS head coach, including a 160-69-3 mark in his six years at McGill.
"I appreciate how well the boys played tonight," said the 41-year-old Nobes, who skated for the Redmen from 1993 to 1997 and was presented with the game puck in the locker room. "Its a very memorable arena to get a milestone victory like that but at the end of the day, it just means that I am getting old."
McGill put on a clinic of speed, transition, execution, special teams, defence, offence and goaltending. They led 1-0 after one and 4-1 after two. The Redmen outshot Ryerson 43-33, went 1-for-2 on the power-play and effectively erased all four shorthanded scenarios.
Heelis, who tallied his sixth of the campaign, was one of six McGill marksmen on the scoresheet, including teammatjes
David Rose (6th), rookie
Redgie Bois (1st),
Jonathan Bonneau (3rd), freshman
Daniel Milne (4th) and rookie blueliner
Dominic Talbot-Tassi (3rd).
Mitch Gallant replied with the lone goal for the Rams, narrowing the gap to 4-1 with just over four minutes remaining in the middle stanza.
Rearguard
Samuel Labrecque collected a pair of assists and continues to lead the CIS national scoring race with a 7-10-17 record in nine games. Red-hot centre
Mathieu Pompei also set up two goals and is tied for third among CIS leaders with 16 points, including seven goals. He has nine points in his last three contests. Senior forward
Patrick Delisle-Houde also collected three helpers.
Goaltender
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, a junior from just outside Sherbrooke, Que., kicked aside 32 of 33 shots for the victory between the pipes, improving his unblemished record to a CIS-leading 8-0. Rams fifth-year senior
Troy Passingham was beaten six times on 40 shots to absorb his first loss of the season. He dropped to 4-1.
McGill, which improved to 8-1 in league play, will continue their four-day road trip with a game against Toronto (3-4-1) at Varsity Arena, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on
OUA.tv, with
live stats available online.
The Rams (6-4-0) will try to snap a two-game losing streak when they travel to Nipissing (3-3-3) and Laurentian (3-5-0), Nov. 13-14.
REDMEN RAP: McGill leads the nation in shots per game (42.2), is ranked third in goals per game (5.0), seventh in goals-against average (2.44)... Their power-play is ranked fourth at 31.1 per cent, while the PK has climbed significantly over the last few weeks, from 34th to 25th at 75.6 per cent.
