Ridgebacks lose heartbreaker to Varsity Blues

OSHAWA, Ont. – One basket. One point. That was the difference Saturday night as the Ontario Tech University fell 55-54 to the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Ridgebacks were close to the program's first-ever victory, but the game-winning basket didn't drop on the final play of the game.

"Our team showed relentless effort this evening. I am proud of them," said head coach Christa Eniojukan. "We will face many more close games and learn from this loss."

Saturday was also the program's first Shoot for the Cure game, which has been running for 12 years across the country. U SPORTS women's basketball programs help to raise funds and awareness about breast cancer, which has been a major success as $1.2 million has been raised during that time.

Ontario Tech now wraps up the opening half of their inaugural season on Friday night in Kingston against the Queen's Gaels.
  • Sarah Bennett finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Varsity Blues offence, while Nada Radonjic was the only other Toronto player in double digits.
Dalyssa Fleurgin (Montreal, Que.) and Jolesha Allen-Brown (Oshawa, Ont.) finished with a team-high 12 points apiece.
Vanessa Budimunda (Montreal, Que.) had a game-high five steals for the Ridgebacks, while also pulling in a team-high 10 boards.
• Sarah Bennett had the lone double-double of the game, grabbing 14 rebounds.
  Overall Record: 0-12
Conference Record: 0-9
