TORONTO --
Jonathan Bonneau scored the winning goal and set up another as McGill played nip-and-tuck with Toronto and skated to a 4-3 road victory in OUA men's hockey at Varsity Arena, Saturday. The victory extended McGill's win streak to six consecutive contests.
It marked the 223rd confrontation with the Varsity Blues in a long-standing rivalry that began way back on Feb. 20, 1899. McGill is 87-121-15 lifetime against Toronto, including a 29-10-4 mark in the last 43 meetings.
After McGill jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period courtesy of freshman
Daniel Milne's goal, first-year forward
Max Lindsay responded for the Blues, tying the score at 1-1 with just five minutes remaining.
However, the Redmen exploded with two goals in an 11-second span -- at 19:31 and 19:42 -- by
Patrick Delisle-Houde and
and Rock Regimbald to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
Midway through the second,
Jonathan Bonneau beat Varsity Blues fifth-year goaltender
Brett Willows, to make it 4-1.Â
In the final frame, Varsity Blues forward
Connor Cleverley converted a pass from
Matt Heffernan in the slot for a quick wrist shot at 13:55, narrowing the gap to 4-2.Â
With Willows pulled for an extra attacker, Toronto pushed but captain
Andrew Doyle and scoring leader
Patrick Marsh were both stymied by McGill goaltender
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard. By the time that the Blues had solved how to beat the McGill goalie,
Mathew Campagna found the back of the net at 19:55 to make it 4-3, but they ran out of time.
Gervais-Chouinard made 29 saves and improved to 9-0 on the season, while Willows saved 24 of 28 shots and took the loss.
The Varsity Blues (3-5-1) return to action on Nov. 13 when they travel to Sudbury, Ont., to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs (4-5-0). McGill, which sits one point ahead of UQTR (8-1-1), atop the OUA East with a stellar 9-1 record, will host Laurier (4-5-0) and Waterloo (4-6-0), Nov. 13-14, respectively.
REDMEN RAP: McGill defenceman
Samuel Labrecque, was held pointless for only the third time in 10 games this season. He is now in a five-way tie for the CIS scoring lead with a 7-10-17. Teammate
Mathieu Pompei (7-10-17) is one of those in the tie for the CIS lead, one point ahead of
David Rose (6-10-16).
