Guelph, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Western Mustangs Friday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center. Set scores were 19-25, 21-25 & 17-25. From there, the Mustangs extended the lead and took the set 25-19. The Gryphons jumped out to an 8-4 lead to start set 2 but a 10-1 run allowed Western to lead 16-11 again at the timeout. Guelph closed the lead to 2 points later in the set but could get no closer falling 25-21. The third set saw another early Gryphon lead evaporate as this time is was a 10-4 Mustang run that allowed them to seize control and close out the match at 25-17.
Coach Funk said, "We got our butts kicked in just about every phase of the game tonight. A combination of not following the game plan and losing individual battles was the difference and Western deserved full credit for the win."
Becky Breau (7 kills, 1 ace) with 8 points and
Maddie DeDecker (6 kills, 1 ace) with 7 points led the Guelph offense with
Kristen Almhjell contributing 14 digs on defense. The Gryphons finish their 4 game home stand tomorrow night @ 6pm against the Windsor Lancers.
