Guelph, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves in straight sets Thursday night at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-22 & 25-13.
The first set started with the teams trading points early on but the Gryphons were able to pull away late to win the set 25-18. Set 2 saw Lakehead jump out to an early 13-6 lead and held a 16-9 advantage at the technical timeout. From there, Guelph was able to chip away at the lead to even the set at 22 and eventually complete the comeback at 25-22. In the third set, Guelph fell behind early again but a number of unforced errors by Lakehead allowed the Gryphons to recover and forge a big lead which they never relinquished, winning 25-13.
Coach Funk said, "The comeback in the second set was the best stretch we've played in a few weeks and really changed the complexion of the match. Meghan Morelli and Libby Donevan did a great job coming off the bench and made contributions that allowed us to win the set."
Guelph's offense was led by
Becky Breau with 16 points (11 kills, 4 aces, 1 block) followed by
Nicole Collard with 10 (8 kills 2 blocks) while
Kristen Almhjell and
Maddie Dedecker had 9 digs each on defense.
The Gryphons will face a rematch against the Thunderwolves Friday night at 8pm.
