OSHAWA, Ont. – The U Sports no. 3 ranked UOIT women's soccer team closed out OUA conference play with a 6-0 road victory over the Trent Excalibur.
With the win, the eastern conference champions finish the year with a 13-2-1 record, their best in the five-year history of the program. Their previous high of 12 wins came back in 2014 when the team won an OUA bronze medal and advanced to the CIS national championship
The Ridgebacks sit atop of the OUA standings with 40 points, seven more of than the York Lions and Western Mustangs who will square off on Sunday for top spot in the West.
It took a while for UOIT's offence to get going in Saturday's season finale as the team's were scoreless for the opening half hour.
Sara Voisin (Waterloo, Ont.) would finally break the stalemate scoring her third goal of the year in the 36
th minute.
Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.), who is no stranger to finding the back of the net, scored her ninth goal of the year in the 41st minute to give UOIT a 2-0 advantage at the half.
It was a good homecoming for Peterborough native
Rhiannon Kissel who scored two second half goals for UOIT. The first-year life sciences major has 14 goals this season to lead the nation in scoring heading into the final day of play.
Sarah Harvey (Bowmanville, Ont.) and
Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) rounded out scoring for UOIT with a goal apiece.
Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) and
Victoria Savage (Woodbridge, Ont.) split time in goal for the Ridgebacks 10th shutout this season. UOIT would outshoot Trent 22-3 in the win.
By finishing in first place, UOIT advances to the OUA quarter-final round for the first time since 2014. UOIT's playoff game will either take place on Saturday or Sunday at the Oshawa Civic Fields. Their opponent will be determined during the opening round of the playoffs that take place on Wednesday.
