RECAP: Gee-Gees drop home match against Carabins
With two sets decided at 25-23 in favour of the visiting Carabins, there was little to separate the teams in the Gee-Gees' 3-0 loss to Montreal on Saturday night at Montpetit Hall.
Following the nail-biting first two sets, the Carabins were able to close out the final set by a more decisive 25-14 final score.
In the first set, Ottawa reversed an 18-15 lead for the Carabins, erupting for six-consecutive points to claim a 21-18 lead. Unfortunately for the Gee-Gees, Montreal rattled off five consecutive points of their own to reclaim their lead, eventually earning the set win.
The second set was deadlocked through the early stages with neither team forfeiting an inch. Ottawa was dialed in, rising to the challenge to tie the set multiple times, ultimately knotting the set at 23-23 before two errors led Montreal to a 2-0 advantage entering the third set.
In the third set, the Carabins dominated the late stages of the set to secure the match win, exacting revenge on the Gee-Gees, who handed Montreal a loss on their home floor just two weeks prior.
STATS AT A GLANCE
Grace McKale logged a strong all-around effort leading the Gee-Gees with seven kills, two aces and, 10 digs on the defensive end. First-year Nicole Hildebrand was active at the net adding four solo blocks on the night.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"I couldn't be more proud of them tonight, we did a lot at the net, a lot of blocking against a big team. Montreal wants first place, you can tell by how they played. That could have been a five-setter, or three-setter the way it was. Three matches left, whether we have a shot at playoffs or not, we have the chance to keep going the direction we want to go." – Head Coach Lionel Woods
