Ryerson defeats No. 8 Gaels

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team rallied from a first set loss to take the next three straight to knock off the No. 8 nationally ranked Queen's Gaels 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

BOXSCORE

Lucas Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) led the Rams with a team-high 18 kills to lead the offence while Rob Wojcik (Whitby, Ont.) and Marc Reardon (London, Ont.) each added 14 points in the win.

The Rams had a big night at the net, racking up three solo blocks alongside 27 block assists compared to just two and twelve, respectively, for the Gaels. Middle Uchenna Ofoha (Markham, Ont.) was in on seven of those blocks to lead the Rams.

In a back and forth first set the Gaels led by a slim 16-15 advantage at the technical timeout before closing it out with a strong attack game. The visitors had 16 kills in the set en route to a 25-22 victory.

Ryerson put the first out of their minds and came out stronger in the second set. Some strong serving led to several lengthy Rams streaks and the home side took that momentum to a 25-21 victory to tie the match at 1-1.

The Rams were efficient in the third, totalling 13 kills and just three errors as they took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-18 third set victory.

WIth the momentum now on their side, the Rams played with confidence in the fourth and was able to close out the Gaels with a 25-21 set win to take the match 3-1.

Queen's Marko Dakic finished with a game-high 20 kills and was the only Gael to reach double digits in kills.

This is the second time the Rams have defeated Queen's this season after sweeping the Gaels 3-0 back in October in Kingston. Ryerson improves their record to 12-4 on the year and move into sole possession of second place in the OUA while Queen's falls to 11-4 on the season and sit in third place.

The Rams have a week off before next facing the No. 1 ranked McMaster Marauders in Hamilton on February 11.
