Late push falls short for Ridgebacks

OSHAWA, Ont. – There was no last-minute magic Saturday evening, as the visiting UQTR Patriotes held on 3-2 to beat the Ontario Tech University men's hockey team.

Ontario Tech put themselves behind the eight ball early, as they got into penalty trouble. Although successful in killing off the first two penalties, the Ridgebacks eventually broke in the last five minutes as the visitors took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

"We beat ourselves in the first," said head coach Curtis Hodgins. "We played pretty well the rest of the game and almost fought back, but we beat ourselves in the first."

The home team looked liked they had tied the game early in the second period, but the goal was called back and UQTR promptly increased their lead just minutes later. The non-goal energized the Ridgebacks as they began to take over the game but were unable to dig out of the 3-0 hole.

Ontario Tech will head to Ottawa next weekend to conclude their first half schedule, opening the weekend with a tilt against the No. 3 Carleton Ravens Saturday night.

Jack Patterson (Bedford, N.S.) scored both Ridgebacks goals, with his first coming at 17:49 of the second. He later pulled the home team within a goal at 13:21 of the third period.
• William Leblanc made it 1-0 at 7:09 of the first, moments after a Ridgebacks penalty had expired. Samuel L'Italien converted on the Patriotes third power play of the period at 15:58.
• Jordan Martel scored the eventual winner at 5:09 of the second.

Michael Bullion (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 18 shots in the loss.
• Mathieu Bellemare allowed two goals on 35 shots.
