MHKY: Gryphons Win 5-3 Over Concordia

Box Score
Guelph, ON - Saturday night in Guelph, the Gryphons Men's Hockey team won 5-3 over the Concordia Stingers. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 4-5-0 while Concordia falls to 3-5-2.

""After being shut out on Friday night by UQTR, the Gryphons came out on Saturday night flying, creating plenty of chances early, including several good short-handed scoring chances. After having successfully killed an early penalty, the Gryphons would open the scoring at the 4:44 mark of the period when Rob De Fulviis set up Sean Robertson for his 2nd goal of the season to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead.

Concordia answered back, not with a goal, but with a big hit on Guelph's Assistant Captain Rob De Fulviis. De Fulviis was slow to rise but was eventually able to skate off under his own power as Concordia's Garbriel Bourret received a two minute boarding penalty and a 10 minute misconduct for his efforts. The Gryphons however were unable to take advantage on the ensuing power play, but they would find the back of the net again before the end of the period. After Concordia tied the game at 1-1, Guelph would re-take the lead on Captain Nick Trecapelli's first goal of the 2015-16 season. The Gryphons outshot Concordia 15-5 in the 1st and took a 2-1 lead to the 2nd period.

In the 2nd period, tension continued to rise between the two teams as this time, it was the Gryphons who were charged with a 10-minute misconduct as Kyle Neuber was sent to the box. One of the highlights of the 2nd period was a beautiful glove save by U of G goalie Andrew D'Agostini, but the early momentum in the period belonged to the Stingers who were able to score a pair of goals to jump in front 3-2. With under a minute remaining in the period, the Gryphons would even things up when Trecapelli picked up his 5th assist of the season, setting up first year player Robert Lepine for his first goal as a Gryphon. The Gryphons and Stingers were tied at 3-3 heading to the 3rd period.

The final period would also belong to a trio of Gryphon rookies. At the 4:56 mark, Sean Robertson scored his 2nd of the night and 3rd of the season to give Guelph a 4-3 lead. 1:52 later, the Gryphons would strike again, this time with Robert Lepine scoring his 2nd of the night. The two rookies combine for 4 goals, while fellow first year Gryphon Dylan Gilbert picked up assists on each of the 3rd period goals. The Gryphons would go on to win it 5-3 to picke up their third win in their last four games.

The Gryphons are back on the ice on Friday, November 13 when they travel to York University to face the 6-1-2 Lions.
