Pompei and Rose double dip as Redmen leave 'Wolves howling

McGill's Mathieu Pompei (19)
Box Score
MONTREAL -- Mathieu Pompei and David Rose each tallied twice and added a helper as No.4-ranked McGill skated to a 5-1 victory over the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, Friday, at McConnell Arena.

It matched the score of their only meeting last season, held Nov. 15 in Thunder Bay, Ont.,  and improved McGill's lifetime record to 5-7-1 against Lakehead.

The Redmen, who led 3-0 after one period and 4-1 after two, had a productive day on special teams, going 2-for-8 on the power-play and thwarting all eight Lakehead chances.

Rookie defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que., scored his first career regular season marker with the Redmen and added assist.

Samuel Labrecque, another Redmen rearguard, collected a pair of assists and now leads all CIS blueliners in points with a 6-6-12 record in seven contests.

Lakehead forward Jake Wright, a sophomore from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., spoiled Jacob Gervais-Chounard's bid for shutout at 17:26 of the middle stanza. The 6-foot-1, 178-pound junior Redmen netminder from Sherbrooke, Que., made 27 saves for the victory. He improved to 6-0 on the season and 31-7 lifetime in regular season play.

Devin Green, a freshman from Calgary, was beaten five times on 36 shots and took the loss between the pipes for the Thunderwolves.

McGill, which is on a modest three-game win streak, improved to 6-1 on the season. They will host win Lakehead (0-5) again on Saturday at 5 pm

REDMEN RAP: McGill head coach Kelly Nobes improved his lifetime coaching record to 298-237-14 in 549 contests over his 15 years with CIS teams, including previous stints with RMC and Laurier. With the Redmen, Nobes has posted a 158-69-3 record in 230 games over six-plus seasons... Third-year netminder Karel St-Laurent has left the Redmen. He had only suited up for one regular season game, a 3-2 loss to Nipissing. Including preseason play, he posted a 1-4 record in five starts overall, with one shutout, a 3.88 goals-against average and an .881 save percentage... His departure means more playing time for rookie Joe Fleschler, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound native of Summit, N.J., who joined the Redmen late in training camp after two seasons with Drummondville of the QMJHL.
