Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Goalie gigantic, special teams fantastic as top-ranked hockey Redmen bite Badgers, push win streak to nine

ST. CATHARINES, Ont -- Jacob Gervais-Chouinard posted a 32-save shutout to give the top-ranked McGill Redmen a 3-0 road victory over Brock and extend the team's win streak to nine consecutive games in OUA men's hockey action at the Seymour-Hannah Centre, Friday.

The Redmen improved to 25-4-2 lifetime against Brock, outscoring the Badgers 149-72 since the series rendezvous in 1988.

McGill outshot the Badgers 42-32, including a 20-5 margin in the opening period. They led 2-0 after the first, maintained that lead after two and tallied the only goal of the final period. The Redmen were 1-for-3 on the power-play and effectively erased all seven man-advantage situations by Brock.

"The boys in front of me played unreal tonight," said Gervais-Chouinard, a 6-foot-1, 178-pound native of Sherbrooke, Que., who collected his second goose-egg of the season and fifth over his three years with the Redmen. "I didn't have to make a lot of big saves to win this one. It definitely feels good to (earn the shutout)... We did a good job on the PK... and the power-play."

The 22-year-old economics junior improved his unblemished and league-leading record to 12-0 on the campaign. He is ranked second among OUA goalies in both goals-against average (1.99) and save percentage (.932). He is 52-19 in 77 lifetime starts with the Redmen, including a 37-7 record in regular season play.

The Redmen, who lead all CIS teams with 22 goals in 13 games from their blueline, had two from the backend on this soiree. Freshman rearguard Dominic Talbot-Tassi notched his fifth of the season, connecting for what proved to be the game-winner at 7:50 of the first period. Then veteran Samuel Labrecque ripped his 10th of the campaign, on the power-play, at 12:15. The 5-foot-6, 182-pound native of Granby, Que., leads the CIS scoring race with a 10-13-23 record in 13 games. It marks the second straight season that Labrecque has reached the 10-goal plateau and the seventh time in McGill history that a defenceman has scored 10 or more goals in regular-season play, joining an elite group that includes Gilles Hudon (15 in 24 games, 1981-82), Bryan Larkin (14 in 26 games, 1988-89), Nicolas Cantin (11 in 26 games, 1996-97), David Bahl (10 in 26 games, 1999-00), Ryan McKiernan (13 in 28 games, 2013-14) and Labrecque (13 in 26 games, 2014-15).

Rookie forward Daniel Milne put the game out of reach at 16:35 of the final frame, with a shorthanded effort, assisted by centre Liam Heelis, a first-year transfer from Acadia, who now has 18 points in 13 contests.

McGill, which leads the OUA East with a 12-1 record, plays at York (7-2-3) on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be webcast for free on OUA TV, with live stats available.

REDMEN RAP: McGill has four of the top five snipers in the OUA scoring race... The aforementioned Labrecque leads the way with 23 points, followed by F Mathieu Pompei (9-11-20) and Carleton's Brett Welcychka (8-12-20), along with McGill forwards David Rose (7-13-20) and Liam Heelis (6-12-18)...  Hockey Canada announced Friday that former Tampa Bay Lightnng head coach Guy Boucher  -- who was a star forward with McGill from 1991 to 1995 and also earned his coaching stripes as an assistant with the Redmen -- will return as head coach of Canada's entry to the Spengler Cup tournament in Davos Switzerland, Dec. 26-31.
