TORONTO --
Trevor Petersen, a sophomore from Thornhill, Ont., scored the game-winner and added an assist as York University Lions snapped McGill's win streak at nine with a hard-fought 3-2 home-ice victory over the No.1-ranked Redmen at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena, Saturday.
The result avenged York's 3-2 last-second loss to McGill last year as the Redmen lifetime head-to-head record narrowed to 20-12-6 in 38 meetings against York. More importantly for the Lions, they moved one point ahead of Western into sole possesssion of first place in the OUA West with an 8-2-3 record.
The Lions had a 30-28 edge in shots, becoming just the third team to outshoot McGill this season. Redmen netminder
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard saved 27 of 30 shots and was saddled with his first loss of the season as his previously unblemished record tumbled to 12-1. York goalie
Chris Perugini kicked out 26 of 28 for the win and improved to 7-5.
A sloppy first period was McGill's achilles heel as York took advantage of a 4-on-4 scenario to tally twice in 71 seconds on goals by
Justin Larson and
Mitch VanTeeling.
In the second stanza, Redmen rearguard
Samuel Labrecque connected on the power-play at 4:35 to make it 2-1. It was the 11th goal of the season for Labrecque, who leads all CIS blueliners in that department. At the midway mark of the season, he also leads all CIS players in points with 24 in 14 games and is on pace to become the first defenceman to lead the nation in points.
SEE CIS SCORING LEADERSBut Peterson regained the lead for the Lions on the power-play at 17:36. Less than two minutes later, rookie
Daniel Milne replied with his seventh for McGill on the PP to make it 3-2. There was no scoring in the final stanza.
The game featured 46 minutes in penalties, 26 of them assessed to the Lions. McGill was 2-for-7 on the power-play and York was 1-for-4.
McGill, which owns a 14-7 record overall, is 12-2 in regular season play and retains a precarious one-point lead over UQTR (11-2-1) atop the OUA East Division. The Redmen have a challenging three games remaining before the December exam break. They will host they third-place UOIT Ridgebacks (9-3-1) from Oshawa on Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. before heading out to play Queen's (8-3) in Kingston on Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The Redmen are slated to close out the semester on Dec. 2 against bitter rival UQTR at McConnell Arena.
