OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team ran into a hot goaltender on Friday night as Taylor Dupuis made 34 saves to lead Ryerson to a 3-1 victory at the Campus Ice Centre.
The Ridgebacks enter the holiday break with ten wins for the first time in the nine-year history of the program. With a 10-5-1 record, UOIT sits in fourth place in the OUA eastern conference standings trailing Carleton (11-4-0) by one point.
The Ridgebacks' lone goal on Friday came late in the first period, when
Adam Campagnolo (Waterloo, Ont.) crashed the net. The second year forward was able to put one past Dupuis, with
Keaton Lubin (Okotoks, Alta.) and
Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) earning assists.
UOIT threw 35 shots on goal and hit a number of posts, but the bounces seemed to go Ryerson's way all night long.
Mark Petaccio (Sicklerville, N.J.), who scored three goals on Thursday night, was stoned on a breakaway in the opening five minutes of the game, setting the tone for the night.
With the score tied at 1-1 late in the second period, Rams forward Aaron Armstrong took advantage of a Ridgeback turnover, blasting one past
Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) for the game-winning goal.
After fighting off a pair of penalties in the third, the Ridgebacks fired seven shots on goal in the final ten minutes of the game.
James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) had a pair of golden opportunities to tie it, but Dupuis came up big on a breakaway followed by a snap shot ringing off the iron.
Daniel Clairmont scored the game's opening goal for Ryerson and added an assist while Andreas Tsogkas iced the game with his second goal of the season with just three minutes to go. Luke Mercer picked up two assists in the win.
O'Neill finished the night making 26 stops for UOIT, as he enters the break playing all but 20 minutes in the first half of the second. The second-year netminder has a 3.20 goals against average with a .899 save percentage.
UOIT will be back on home ice on Wed. Dec. 30 when they take on the Queen's Gaels in an exhibition game. Conference action will resume on Friday, Jan. 8 in Montreal against Concordia.
