The OUA basketball season got underway Friday night for the Laurentian Voyageurs Women's Basketball team, welcoming the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to the Nickel City and the Ben Avery Gym.

As the game began points were exchanged early with both teams going shot for shot in the first five minutes. The first quarter difference ended up being the Voyageurs' ability to get to the free throw line as they would go on to shoot 7-10 in the quarter from the line finishing quarter number one leading 15-10.

Looking to round out the first half on a good note, the Vees came back out in the second quarter with the defense beginning to take the forefront as Laurentian would limit the Varsity Blues to 25% shooting and hold them to 0-6 from three in the second quarter taking a 27-19 lead into half.

After such a great defensive performance in the second quarter the Voyageurs still weren't satisfied. With the noise of the Pot Bangers behind them Laurentian found a way to hold U of T scoreless in the third quarter as the Vees defense forced 7 turnovers and outrebounded their opponents 15-9 in the third alone.

With Laurentian up 27 going into the fourth quarter it was about keeping the status quo and although U of T came back a bit in the final ten minutes Laurentian was able to hold off the late surge to come away with a 57-38 victory in game 1 of the season.

The Voyageurs were led by a 14 point, 7 rebound performance by freshmen point guard Cadence Pecore who also went 4-4 from the free throw line in the game.

Laurentian has a quick turnaround as they finish the weekend on Saturday night at the Ben Avery gym when they host the TMU Bold with tip-off set for 6pm.
