Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Potent power-play productive as hockey Redmen extend win streak to lucky seven on Friday the 13th

MONTREAL -- Defenceman Samuel Labrecque scored once and set up two others as McGill exploded for four power-play goals en route to a 4-0 conquest over the Golden Hawks from Wilfrid Laurier University in men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

It was the seventh straight victory for the Redmen, who led 2-0 after one period and 4-0 after two. They registered a lopsided 52-15 margin in shots, including a whopping 22-4 difference in the middle stanza.

The game featured 21 penalties, all of them minors, including 14 dished out to the visiting 'Hawks. McGill, which is ranked first in the nation with 19 power-play markers in 11 games, was 4-for-12 with the man-advantage and neutralized all five shorthanded situations.

Labrecque, a 5-foot-6, 182-pound rearguard from Granby, Que., tallied the game-winner and upped his CIS-leading scoring total to 20 points, including eight goals, in 11 contests. He racked up a colossal 11 shots on net, matching a 33-year-old single-game school record for blueliners set by Gilles Hudon (vs UQTR) on Dec. 10, 1982 and equalled by Alain Cusson in a playoff game (vs UQTR), Feb. 23, 1990.

Also finding the net for McGill was David Rose (his 7th), blueliner Dominic Talbot-Tassi (4th) and Rock Regimbald (3rd).

Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, a 6-foot-1, 178-pound native of Ulverton, Que., made 16 saves to collect his first shutout of the campaign, improving his splendid record to 10-0 on the season and 35-7 lifetime in OUA play. Colin Furlong made 48 saves in a losing cause for the 'Hawks as his record tumbled to 1-3.

It was McGill's third lifetime shutout over WLU and their first in a decade -- since a 5-0 win on Nov. 18, 2005 -- as the Redmen improved their lifetime record against WLU to 13-11-1,

McGill (9-1-0) will attempt to extend their win streak to eight when they host Waterloo (4-7) on Saturday (Nov. 14) at 5 p.m. The Warriors played in Oshawa, Friday, where they lost 3-2 to UOIT.
