The Gee-Gees women's volleyball team split their weekend series with Sherbrooke and Laval, earning a dominant win over the Rouge et Or at Montpetit Hall on Sunday, bouncing back from defeat at Sherbrooke on Friday night.
It was a disappointing result in Ottawa's match at Sherbrooke on Friday. The Gee-Gees fell behind early and after losing the first set 25-9 were unable to fair much better in the second. In the third, the Gee-Gees were within striking distance, however Sherbrooke pulled away to earn a 25-19 win and take the match in straight sets.
On Sunday, in Gee-Gees' final home game of the season at Montpetit Hall, they were able to put on a show for their home crowd, defeating Laval 3-0 in convincing fashion.
The first frame proved to me most competitive of the afternoon after Laval made a late charge to tie the set at 22. Two Grace McKale kills and an ace from Avery Hughes gave Ottawa the 25-22 win in thrilling fashion.
The Gee-Gees overpowered the Rouge et Or in the second set earning a 25-19 win and teed up an exciting finish in the final set. In the third, the Gee-Gees built on their momentum and fended off a late charge by Laval to take the 25-20 win and close out the 3-0 victory.
STATS AT A GLANCE:
Audrey Odigie and Grace McKale led the way for the Gee-Gees on Sunday. Odigie had 11 kills, while also tallying 5 digs on the defensive end. McKale, who also led the way for the Gee-Gees on Friday, had 10 kills and an ace in the win. Michaela Jones also registered a match-high 12 digs against Laval.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"To put together a dominant win with everything clicking felt great. With this game and one more next weekend, we have the chance to start our win streak for next year now." – Grace McKale
"We know we are the team who beat Montreal and Laval when they were Top 5, and we are the team that showed up today. We also happen to be young, so we're the team that has lost some matches this year, but I choose to leave the season knowing that we're learning how to win." – Lionel Woods, Head Coach.
UP NEXT:
The Gee-Gees will play their final match of the season against the UQTR Patriotes next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Trois-Rivières.
