Ridgebacks struggle at both ends of the ice against Lions

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team dropped their second straight game after a 6-1 loss to the York Lions on Saturday night.

Coming off a tough 4-3 overtime loss to Ryerson the night before, the Ridgebacks were looking to bounce back in their game against York. Unfortunately, the Ridgebacks offence struggled to get going as they only produced one third period goal from Malik Johnson (Montreal, Que.).

The Lions, who came into the game sitting in fourth in the OUA west, got off to a strong start scoring two goals within the first ten minutes of play. For the majority of the game it seemed as though anytime the Ridgebacks gained momentum the Lions were there to shut them down, going on to score a pair of goals in both the second and third period.

Despite the loss, the Ridgebacks were proud to have joined forces with Kaleb Dahlgren of the York Lions to help promote and support Type 1 diabetes awareness. The Campus Ice Centre saw over 350 fans out supporting the cause.
  • Lions forward Scott Feser opened the scoring midway through the first period when he reached for a cross-ice pass from his defenceman Jack Goranson and was able to redirect the puck in to the back of the net.
• Shortly after their first goal, Lions defensemen Ben Verrall took a shot from the high point that was able to sneak through a crowded front of the net and give them the 2-0 lead early on.
• Lions second-year forward Nik Coric was able to capitalize on a neutral zone turnover by the Ridgebacks, netting their third goal.
• A hard battle on the puck by lions forward Justin Maiolino led to him getting a shot off near the face off circle that he was able to burry, giving the Lions a comfortable 4-0 lead.
• Ridgebacks veteran forward, Malik Johnson, was able to tip in a shot from Tyler Mayea, giving him his third goal of the year and putting the Ridgebacks on the board for the first and only time of the night.
• The Lions answered quickly after when fifth-year forward Reid Jackman found the back of the net.
• York sealed the deal on their win when forward Nick Zottl sniped a shot top corner, leaving the Ridgebacks goaltender no chance at seeing the puck.
Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) got his fourth start of the season in tonight's game, making a total of 21 saves.
• Mack Shields got the start for the Lions and made a total of 29 saves, earning his third win of the season.

  Overall Record: 5-5-0
Conference Record: 3-3-0
