Ridgebacks unable to build on solid first against Rams

OSHAWA, Ont. – After controlling much of the first period, the Ontario Tech University women's hockey team could not maintain momentum Saturday night, dropping a 4-2 decision to the Ryerson Rams.

It's been a rough start to the year for the Ridgebacks, but they came out determined against a Ryerson squad coming off a 6-0 win the previous night. Each team had quality looks at the net, as the opening frame was a back-and-forth affair. The visitors left the opening 20 minutes out shooting the home Rams 11-10, with the extra shot holding as the difference as the Ridgebacks held the 1-0 lead.

From puck drop of the second period it was tough going for Ontario Tech as they could only muster five shots throughout the final 40 minutes of play. Ryerson's relentlessly forecheck paid off in the second half of the middle frame, as they took hold of a two-goal lead within the span of four and a half minutes. The Ridgebacks began a comeback, pulling within one with just 2:30 left in the game, but an empty netter by the Rams spoiled all chances.

Ontario Tech will return home next weekend to welcome the visiting Brock Badgers Friday night.
Katona Goosney (Brampton, Ont.) broke the scoreless deadlock at 10:56 of the first, after curling out of the corner and rifling home her first goal of the season from the slot.
• Erika Crouse evened the game at 12:47 of the second and added her second of the game with the empty netter at 19:04 of the third.
• Olivia Giardetti gave the Rams the lead 14:12 through the second and Laura Ball provided the insurance goal 2:58 later.
Alex Frigon (Dartmouth, N.S.) made it a 3-2 game late in the third, after finishing on a partial breakaway.
Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Ont.) stopped 26 of 29 shots in the loss.
• Rachel Seeley needed 14 saves for the win.
  Overall Record: 1-11-0
Conference Record: 0-8-0
