Late goal sinks Ridgebacks for first loss of second half

OSHAWA, Ont. – A goal with just 1:06 left in regulation handed the Ontario Tech University men's hockey team their first loss of the second half, falling 2-1 to No. 7 ranked McGill University on Sunday afternoon.

The game was the first at home for the Ridgebacks in both the decade and the second half of the season, but they could not hold off a strong third period push by McGill.

After taking the lead halfway through the opening period, the Ridgebacks continued to push for a second marker but could not solve the visiting goalie. Strong team defence held McGill off for much of the remaining time, but a power play goal tied the game halfway through the final frame.

Action went back-and-forth with each team looking for the game winner, with the No. 7 ranked team deflating the Ridgebacks, who could get no momentum for the tying goal.

Ontario Tech returns to action Friday night when they travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels.
Josh Maguire (Cobourg, Ont.) opened the scoring at 11:43 of the first, taking advantage of sloppy McGill defence. • Michael Campoli tied the game for McGill with the power play marker at 9:45 of the third, while Nathanael Halbert provided the winning goal late.
Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) stopped 25 of 27 shots in the loss.
• Emanuel Vella had 29 saves, picking up the win.
