OUA By the Numbers (Oct. 25)
3,921 – In his final game with the school, University of Toronto Varsity Blues kicker TJ Morton punted nine times for 417 yards on the day, ending his campaign with 87 punts for a total of 3,921 yards. This mark helped Morton put his name in the OUA record books for most punting yardage in a single season breaking the previous record of 3,621 yards, set in 2000.
75 – An impressive season from Laurier receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. was capped off in fine fashion on Saturday against the Marauders, as the Ottawa native collected 10 catches for 114 yards in the win. With the double digit receptions, Gittens Jr. becomes the new OUA and U SPORTS record holder for single season receptions with 75, while also setting a team record for receiving yards (953).
33 – It was a record setting day for Guelph Gryphons kicker Gabriel Ferraro in his team’s regular season finale against Carleton. Not only did his 7-for-7 field goal performance (and 22 point total output) help his team secure the 28-23 win over the Ravens, but it also helped him break the OUA’s record for most field goals made in a single season with 33; a record previous held by his older brother, Daniel Ferraro (26 FGM in 2014).
24 – After coming away with a 43-17 women’s rugby gold medal win over the Queen’s Gaels – a match that saw that Gryphons pull away in the final stretch – Guelph was able to earn their seventh title in the past 10 years. Perhaps more impressively, however, is that by earning a medal in their 2017 efforts, the Gryphons have now earned a medal in 24 consecutive years.
22 – In a thrilling Nike North America Challenge between the McMaster Marauders and Ohio State Buckeyes, it was third-year standout Matt Passalent that buoyed the Hamilton squad to a 3-2 win, thanks in large part to his match high 22 kills (hitting at a blistering 65% on the night).
7 – McMaster’s Women’s Soccer team clinched the sixth and final playoff seed with their back-to-back wins last weekend, and a significant part of their victorious efforts was rookie forward Lindsay Bosveld. Despite entering the game with just two tallies on the year, Bosveld notched seven goals in their final two games against Algoma, including a three and four goal effort, respectively, which led to her ending the season as the Marauders leading scorer.
5 – After trailing 4-3 through the first half of play, the Western Women’s Lacrosse team broke out for a game-changing five goals in the opening nine minutes of the second half to come from behind and defeat the Queen’s Gaels 9-7. The win also marked their seventh lacrosse championship in school history.
0 – It was quite an opening weekend for Varsity Blues goalie Madeline Albert. The first-year puck stopper was rock solid in net in both of her team’s games this weekend, allowing zero goals en route to back-to-back shutouts. Albert picked up a 22-save win over York (7-0) and 29-save performance over Laurier (2-0) to become the first U of T goalie to record back-to-back shutouts in over a decade.
