TORONTO (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Monday the reception of 21 bid proposals to host national championship events from 2017 to 2019.
This latest round of bidding was for CIS tournaments in women’s rugby (2017 and 2018), women’s soccer (2017 and 2018), men’s soccer (2017 and 2018), women’s volleyball (2018 and 2019) and men’s volleyball (2018 and 2019).
The CIS championship selection committee will meet to review the bids, and all hosts will be announced by mid-July.
Men’s volleyball and women’s soccer proved the most popular of the five disciplines up for bid with no less than five schools expressing interest for one or both years. Reigning silver medalists McMaster and Trinity Western, respectively, each placed bids, along with Brandon, Laval, Toronto and Waterloo in men’s volleyball, and Manitoba, Ottawa, Queen’s, and York for women’s soccer.
McMaster, the 2015 gold medalist in women’s rugby, is in the running for the next two tournaments, with Lethbridge, Ottawa and St. FX rounding out the field.
In men’s soccer, 2015 host York, winners of the last two CIS championships, expressed interest, as well as Thompson Rivers, and UBC. While Thompson Rivers was the lone bidder for 2017, the selection committee still has to review its bid to ensure it meets or exceeds the CIS hosting standards.
Four bids were received for women’s volleyball, including from Alberta, UBC, Calgary and Laval.
