MALE: Guelph Gryphons – Football
The Gryphons rose as high as fourth in the CIS Top 10 rankings in October, posting a perfect 4-0 record.
Guelph’s perfect month came against four very formidable opponents as the team faced the Windsor Lancers, Carleton Ravens, Western Mustangs, and Laurier Golden Hawks.
All four teams finished with .500 or above records, and three (Windsor, Western, and Laurier) were ranked in the Top 10 at some point this season.
Perhaps no win was more impressive than the 49-46 thrilling defeat of the Mustangs on Oct. 18. The win propelled Guelph past Western in both the OUA standings and CIS Top 10 rankings.
It was also a record-setting month for Guelph, as the team watched its kicker Daniel Ferraro set a new single-season field goal record, and saw Jazz Lindsey throw for a school-record 513 yards against the Mustangs.
Guelph is now preparing to host an OUA semi-final game this Saturday against the Western Mustangs in a rematch of one of the best OUA football games this season.
Women’s: Ottawa Gee-Gees – Soccer
The Gee-Gees went 7-0 through the month of October in the OUA regular season and playoffs, outscoring opponents 20-1 over that time.
Heading into the OUA Final Four, the Gee-Gees ranked no. 1 in the CIS Top 10 and had six players named OUA East Division All-Stars, including the division’s Most Valuable Player Award winner Pilar Khoury.
Their strong October carried over into the OUA Final Four on Nov. 1-2. Khoury scored both Ottawa goals in back-to-back 1-0 victories that captured the team its record eighth OUA Championship.
The team now heads to the CIS National Championship in Quebec City Nov. 6-9 riding an 18-game winning streak.
