MALE: Guelph Gryphons - Hockey
Simply put, February was a magical month for the Guelph Gryphons men’s hockey team, who surprised many with their Cinderella run to the Queen’s Cup.
After closing out the regular season schedule with three consecutive wins to secure a playoff spot, the Gryphons entered the postseason as the No. 6 seed in the conference and defeated three higher-ranked opponents, earning the opportunity to host the UQTR Patriotes in the 104th Queen’s Cup.
Guelph got off to a rocky start in the playoffs, losing its series opener against the Waterloo Warriors, before storming back and winning the next two games, taking the best-of-3 series 2-1.
The same thing happened in the next round against the Toronto Varsity Blues when Guelph dropped Game 1 before winning the next two.
In the OUA semifinals, though, the Gryphons didn’t leave anything to chance, sweeping the top-seeded, defending Queen’s Cup champion Windsor Lancers 2-0.
The Gryphons finished February with an 8-2 record and now look to win their first OUA championship since 1997 on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Guelph.
FEMALE: Brock Badgers – Wrestling
In the month of February, the Brock Badgers women’s wrestling team captured its fourth consecutive CIS National Championship – the fifth in school history – along with the 14th OUA Championship in program history.
Brock won four gold medals, along with one silver and one bronze, at both the OUA and CIS Championships, and became the first school in OUA history to have all its wrestlers win a medal at the conference championships.
Jade Parsons won her fourth straight CIS gold medal for the Badgers in the 48kg weight class. Carlene Sluberski (55kg), Indira Moores (59kg), and Jessica Brouilette (63kg) also won gold for Brock and the CIS Championships.
