Mustangs’ He, Szilvassy named IG Wealth Management Peak Performers
Burlington, Ont. – Helen He and Andre Szilvassy have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Peak Performers for the period ending October 7, 2018.
Helen He (Guelph, Ont.) – 5th Year – Western Mustangs
Andre Szilvassy (Burlington, Ont.) – 5th Year – Western Mustangs
It was a winning start to the OUA banner season for the Western Mustangs, as they claimed the conference’s first two titles of the 2018-19 season. Helping the purple ponies women’s and men’s team claim gold on the tennis courts were standouts Helen He and Andre Szilvassy.
He once again showcased her dominance en route to the team’s third straight championship. That wasn’t the only streak that was extended to three; however, as He added several additional accomplishments to her already jam-packed resume. For the third consecutive year, the Guelph, Ont. native was named Player of the Year, while also being named an OUA all-star.
Helping her to reach these impressive marks was an undefeated weekend that saw her take down the competition in both singles and doubles play. In the semifinals, He blew past McMaster’s Maya Emerson, 6-0, 6-0, while also earning the win with Sophie Biu in the top doubles pairing. She then repeated the doubles win with Biu in the gold medal matches and added a 6-2, 6-3 win over top Toronto player, Mara Stroe.
Putting forth an equally impressive performance on the men’s side, meanwhile, was fellow Mustang Andre Szilvassy, who also came away with Player of the Year and all-star honours for the banner-winning Mustangs.
To kick off his championship play, Szilvassy brought home a singles win against top York player Tegbir Hara, 6-2, 6-0. He also shone in doubles play with partner Matthew Oliver, as the pair took home a convincing win for the purple and white to help clinch the finals berth. In the finals then, Szilvassy took care of business once again against top competitor Brett Stinson, losing just three games in the straight sets victory, while also scoring a second win in doubles with Oliver.
Szilvassy’s play was a key contributor in helping Western serve up their 20th men’s tennis title overall.
