Garrett Whelan, the reigning OUA bronze medalist in men's sabre, went undefeated on Sunday at the 2018 Brock Open en route to a gold medal in a field of over 60 competitors in senior men's sabre.
The chemical engineering student swept his opponents in the Poule round before being seeded 5th for Direct Elimination. After getting past his lower-ranked opponents, the RMC third-year bested the 4th ranked fencer from Queen's in the quarterfinals, 15-10, before going head-to-head with Toronto's Sukveer Matharu, the top-ranked fencer, in the semis.
Whelan cruised to a 15-9 victory to earn a spot in the gold medal bout, where he faced Brock's Aaron Olmstead. While the home crowd favoured the Brock fencer, Whelan led throughout the fight, finishing the match up 15-11 to win gold for the Paladins. In a truly dominant performance, the 15-11 score of the final bout was Whelan's closest fight of the elimination round.
