Sumner wins first 8km women's cross country race at Fort Henry

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 15, 2016) - It was a historic homecoming for the Queen's cross country teams, namely for Claire Sumner (Calgary) took home a 1st place finish in the first 8km race for a women's program. The identical 8km runs for both women and men is believed to be the first collegiate cross-country meet in North America where both the men and women contested identical race distances.

Sumner finished as the lead female in a time of 27:50.91 which was exactly one second ahead of her teammate, Julie-Anne Staehli (Lucknow, Ont.). Rounding out the top five for the Gaels were 6th place Beatrice Cigagna (Tottenham, Ont.), 7th place Taylor Sills (Odessa, Ont.) and 8th place Shannen Murray (Brucefield, Ont.) in times of 29:52.78, 30:15.00 and 30:18.75 respectively.

Finishing in third place overall was local high school runner Brogan MacDougall in a time of 27:51.91. The Western Mustangs were second to the Gaels 24 overall points with 31 of their own.

On the men's side the Gaels narrowly missed out on a 1st place overall finish as Western had 28 total points to the Gaels 29. Finishing in second place leading the way for Queen's was Eric Wynands (Lyn, Ont.) in a time of 24:48.94. Also in the top five were 4th and 5th place runners Mark Schmidt (Gads Hill, Ont.) and Robert Kanko (Toronto) in times of 25:19.28 and 25:20.24.

Jack Sheffar from the Western team finished first overall to win the men's 8km race in a time of 24:32.56.

Thunderwolves men finish third at Queen's Cross Country Invitational

The Lakehead Cross Country teams competed in the Queen's University Invitational this past weekend where the men's team placed 3^rd overall.

"Mixed results today – some really strong runs but as a team we can and need to have everyone run their best on the same day," commented Coach Sigsworth.

Gavin Shields (20) led his team finishing at 26:12 and Tyler White (23) following in at 26:29. Derek Patterson (25) and Joseph McDonough (27) came in just after at 26:38 and 26:43.

The women's team did not race a full team but successfully competed individually with Heather Maxfield finishing 22 overall with a time of 31:38. Kayla Gallo (30) finished in 32:31 and Natasha Frank (41) not far behind ran in at 34:49.

Mustangs men win gold, women silver at Queen's Invitiational

KINGSTON, Ont. – The Mustangs posted impressive results at the Queen's Invitational on Saturday, with the men winning gold and the women taking silver.

The men's team finished first overall with a top five average time of 25:08.41, or 3:40.28 per kilometer. On the women's side, the Mustangs placed second overall in the first ever running of an 8k race in program history. Western totalled 2:26:09 among the top five finishers, averaging 3:40.28 per kilometer.
 
Jack Sheffar was the team's top performer, finishing first overall with a time of 24:32.56. The London native finished thirteen seconds ahead of the second place finisher, and more than 20 seconds ahead of the next Mustang to cross the finish line. Ben Carson recorded a time of 24:48.94 for fourth overall, while Shane Roberts was the final Mustang to land in the top ten, ending with a time of 25:21.87 for tenth overall.
 
For the fourth meet in a row, Kristina Popadich recorded the fastest purple and white time. The Business student finished the race with a time of 27:54.50 for fourth place, just .38 seconds behind the third place finisher. Amy Stephenson came in fourth, averaging 3:33.49 per kilometer with a final time of 28:27.97. Katherine Lampard also finished in the top ten, coming in at eighth after recording a time of 29:20.88, averaging 3:40.11 per kilometer.
 
The Mustangs now look to October 29 for their next meet, with OUA Championships set to be held in Toronto.
